The Hauenstein Center at Saint Mary’s

Witness the Evolution of Excellence

The Hauenstein Center is the newest building to open its doors on the Saint Mary’s Health Care campus in Grand Rapids. This $60 million facility brings together all outpatient and inpatient neuroscience services under one roof for maximum patient convenience and physician collaboration. It also houses a new critical care unit, a new expanded emergency department and Level II trauma facility.

Emergency and Trauma Highlights:

  • Designed to significantly improve the patient’s experience, enhance privacy, and facilitate quicker service
  • Streamlined communications, advanced imaging, and rapid response
  • Three times the size of our former emergency department
  • 44 all-private emergency rooms
  • Four state-of-the-art trauma bays
  • Clinical and retail pharmacy open 12 hours per day, seven days per week
  • 64-slice CT scanner and digital radiology
  • Point-of-care laboratory services for common tests
  • Direct access to the Critical Care Unit
  • An electronic charting system for medical records and prescriptions
  • Children’s lounge with interactive game system
  • Dedicated family space
  • Rooftop helistop for air ambulances

Neuroscience Program Highlights:

  • Entire continuum of care: Education and prevention, diagnosis, acute treatment including surgical options, rehabilitation, ongoing management
  • Neuroscience services include: ALS, Alzheimer’s/memory Disorders, epilepsy/seizure disorders, neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-diagnostics, neurology, neurosurgery, neuro-rehabilitation, Parkinson’s/movement Disorders, diseases of the spine, and acute stroke care
  • The first service for the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy in the state of Michigan, including a 4-bed epilepsy monitoring unit and treatments such as epilepsy surgery which can eliminate seizures
  • True “one-stop shop,” with same-day expert evaluation on a patient’s condition
  • Ancillary services such as physical therapy, nutrition counseling, social services, nurse practitioner support, and others to provide “one-stop-shopping” for patients and families
  • Decentralized nursing stations – one for every two rooms
  • Mechanical patient lift in every room to promote patient and staff safety
  • Expanded research partnership with Van Andel Institute on Parkinson’s Disease

Critical Care Unit Highlights:

  • A state-of-the-art unit with 32 private patient rooms
  • Adjacencies to surgery and other ancillary services for maximum patient convenience
  • Acuity adaptable rooms – means patients do not have to be transferred to other units when their status changes. We bring needed staff and equipment to the patient.
  • Every patient room has a window as well as a family zone, patient/clinical zone, and caregiver zone
  • Sofa /sleeper bed in each room for family members
  • Family lounge on the unit with kitchen
  • Room service/food on demand

  • Comforting, healing environment
  • All art was created by Michigan artists and involve Michigan landscapes
  • Green roof on top of emergency department
  • Seeking silver LEED certification
  • A 550 space parking ramp for the convenience of our patients and visitors
  • Valet parking at the main entrance from 7:30 am - 5 pm, Monday through Friday
  • Located at 220 Cherry Street, between Lafayette Avenue and Jefferson Avenue next to The Lacks Cancer Center

The $60 million building was named for Grand Rapids businessman and philanthropist Ralph Hauenstein, who gave the capital campaign lead gift and led fund-raising efforts.
