Clinical Career Path
Pharmacy Tech l – lll
Assists the pharmacist in the Long Term Care, Family Pharmacy
or Hospital Pharmacy by filling prescriptions, packaging medication
using a packaging machine, greeting customers and operating
the cash register, and pharmacy computer systems. Refills
stock intravenous (IV) solution and medication carts, answers
the telephone for the department and exchanges unit dose carts/cassettes.
Responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, training
and trouble shooting of automated dispensing equipment used
within the department. Prepares Intravenous Solutions, Chemotherapy
injections, and compounds medications under pharmacist supervision.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Work experience in combination with completion of formal
pharmacy technician training program or one-two years of
college with strong emphasis on math, and science.
- Medical field applications or Certified Pharmacy Technician
(CPhT) preferred.
- Personal computer, keyboarding and software applications
experience required.
Ability to:
- Apply mathematical skills (multiplication, division,
addition, and subtraction) in calculations involving fractions,
decimals, percentages and volumes.
- Analyze physician's orders, prescriptions for accuracy,
correctness and independently judge when clinical expertise
of a Pharmacist is necessary.
- Ability to instruct other pharmacy personnel, patients
and nursing personnel from other facilities in various procedures,
medication questions and problems.
- Elicit cooperation and verify understanding from this
same group also.
