Volunteer Services

List of Volunteer Opportunities

Items marked with * indicate current opportunity (as of 7/9/07)

Administrative Support (Daytime)* 
Various positions are available where volunteers provide support clinical and non-clinical staff with filing, collating and reception duties.  Typing or data entry may also be involved if the volunteer has these skills.

Clinical Unit Volunteers (Daytime and Evenings)*
Volunteers offer support with patient escort, run errands, stock supplies, and perform duties as assigned by the Clinical staff.  Volunteers are not permitted to provide medical treatment. This opportunity is a minimum of 250 hours or one-year commitment due to training required.

Emergency Department Treatment Area Volunteer*
(Mon 8-12p, Fri 8-12p & Mon-Fri shifts available 8p-12am)
Volunteers offer support with patient escort, run errands, stock supplies, and perform duties as assigned by the ED staff.  Volunteers are not permitted to provide medical treatment. This opportunity is a minimum of 250 hours or one-year commitment due to training required.

Flower & Patient Mail Delivery (Thursday 1-3pm or Tuesday 1-3pm beginning in Fall)*
Volunteers deliver flowers and patient mail in a relaxed, cheerful, warm-hearted manner. Great opportunity if looking for patient interaction.

Gift Shop (Daytime)* & The Shoppe at Lacks Cancer Center ***
Volunteers assist customers with their shopping needs, run cash register, stock shelves, assist with coffee/espresso orders and complete other responsibilities of the gift shop.

Guest Services for Main Hospital & Lacks Cancer Center (Daytime)***
Answer patient information phone and provide directions, information for patients and visitors.

Community Health Clinics (Daytime & Evenings)*

  • Diabetes Outreach & Education Program and Community Health Centers:
  • Heartside Clinic serves people who are homeless and without a permanent residence.
  • Browning Claytor office is trained to consider the whole person, the young, the aged, and everyone in between, as well as the family and the community in which they live. (Located in an area where there is a higher than normal infant mortality rate)
  • Clinica Santa Maria provides primary health care to the Hispanic community’s homeless, underserved and working poor.
  • McAuley Health Center provides responsive, respectful and compassionate care for people who are infected and affected by the HIV virus.
  • Sparta Health Center serves migrant workers. The Physician and Physician Assistants have been trained to consider the whole person, their family, and the community in which they live, not just an illness or body system.

Lab Runner (Daytime)
Volunteers assist both the Pathology and Outpatient Registration departments by greeting patients as they arrive, escorting them when necessary, and transporting clinical laboratory specimens to the Specimen Control Area of Pathology.

Outpatient Pharmacy (Daytime)
Responsibilities would be primarily clerical to include filing invoices, prescriptions and other documents.  Inventory and restock supplies, greet customers and answer phones and route callers to appropriate staff.

Patient Transport (Fall Opportunities available)**
Transport patients to various areas of the hospital campus, deliver medical supplies and equipment to patient rooms, and gather wheelchairs as needed. Great patient interaction and overview of Hospital operations.

Surgery Waiting Room (Mon- Fri 12-4p)**
Volunteers assist friends and family members who use the Surgery Waiting Room while a patient is in surgery, act as liaison between the surgical staff and the family/friends, answer phones.

Wege Center for Health & Learning (Monday 8-12p, Fri 8-12p)
Administrative Office: special projects, data entry, filing, copying, etc.
Medical Office – filing, collating, opening mail, make reminder phone calls for patient appointments, etc.
Guest Services: Ensure way finding for patients/guests and provide wheelchair assistance as necessary.

Women’s Services (Daytime/Evening)**
Volunteers visit with OB patients, offer support with patient escort, run errands, stock supplies, and perform duties as assigned by the Women’s Services staff. Must be reliable and willing to sign minimum of 6-month commitment.

Warren Reynolds Library (Daytime)
Provide assistance to oncology patients and their families through the services in the Lacks Cancer Center’s Warren Reynolds Library.  Assist with various needs in the library including light research, re-shelving materials and delivery of requested materials.  Must be comfortable with computers/technology.

Materials Management Assistant or Mail Room Assistant (Daytime & Evenings)**
Assisting Materials Management staff with delivery of Hospital supplies and order entry. Must be comfortable with walking for long periods of time. (great opportunity for 16-17yr old)
