Saint Mary's Breast Services

Who we are

The best response to the danger of breast cancer is to make it as easy as possible for women to detect early and highly curable cancers. To that end, Saint Mary's Health Care established Breast Services.

Since 1983, our Breast Services has been a central source for education, early detection, and support in West Michigan. Breast health awareness, screening services including mammography, ultrasounds, and biopsy procedures are some of the services empowering women with knowledge, comfort, confidence, and strength.

How do I schedule an appointment?

To schedule a mammogram please call (616) 752-6756 or 1-800-639-6266 for an appointment.

Breast Services include:

Mammography

  • MAMMOGRAPHY - A specially trained registered mammographic technologist will perform a low dose x-ray of the breast according to the American Cancer Society guidelines and/or your physician order.
  • RESULTS - Your mammogram will be interpreted by a radiologist. A written report will be sent to your physician and you will receive report results by mail.

Mammography Appointments
To schedule an appointment, please call: 616-752-MAMM (6266) or 1-800-639-6266. Find out about our free mammogram services.

Breast Ultrasound
A breast ultrasound may be used to evaluate a breast lump seen on the mammogram or felt by you or your physician. Ultrasound is not used as a screening tool for breast cancer but can determine if what is seen or felt is a solid mass or a fluid filled cyst.

Needle Localization
If the radiologist identifies a change in the breast tissue or the mammogram, your personal physician may schedule a biopsy. Prior to the biopsy the surgeon may ask to have this non-palpable area identified by the placement of a very fine wire in the breast tissue.

Core Needle Biopsy
This service offers an alternative to surgical biopsy for the woman whose mammogram reveals a suspicious area in the breast before it can be felt on physical exam. An outpatient procedure, this biopsy is performed by a radiologist at The Breast Center. Ultrasound or computer guided x-ray is used to position a biopsy needle in a specified area of the breast. Sample cells are evaluated by a pathologist and follow-up is provided by your personal physician.

Cost information

The costs of tests performed, including mammography, are generally covered by insurance. Specific information on charges is available on request. Check with your carrier to determine its reimbursement policy. If you participate in an HMO or are under age 35, a referral from your physician is necessary to perform a mammogram. Please bring your insurance information with you at the time of your appointment.

Saint Mary's does not want you to avoid a mammogram because of financial need. Special arrangements can be made in such cases. Find out about our free mammogram services.
