Lacks Cancer Center at Saint Mary’s Health Care
Wins Top Honors in 2005 Associated Builders and Contractors
Construction Awards Program
The Lacks Cancer Center at Saint Mary’s Health Care
was named the big winner in the 2005 Associated Builders and
Contractors 2005 Construction Awards Competition on October
25, earning top honors in 5 categories, including the prestigious
“Medical Construction over $20 million” category.
“Excellent, top notch workmanship,…just beautiful
– very well done,…detail work impeccable,”
were judges’ comments about the 175,000-square foot
building, which was completed in December 2004 and opened
to patients in January of this year.
The completed Cancer Center houses 42 private patient rooms,
four surgical suites, a full chef’s kitchen, the Warren
Reynolds Patient Information Library, a chapel, a rooftop
garden, and a soaring atrium in the lobby.
“We are honored by this award,” commented Philip
H. McCorkle, Jr., President and CEO of Saint Mary’s.
“The building design was the result in great part of
many conversations we had with cancer patients regarding what
they wanted and needed in a cancer facility. And our donors
made this all possible – the building was funded entirely
through philanthropy.”
The building was constructed in keeping with national Green
Building standards, and special care was given to eliminate
disruption to the surrounding historical Heritage Hill neighborhood.
