Lowell Students Inspire Patients
Lowell Students Inspire Patients
Through the gift of handmade cards and blankets, Lowell high schoolers demonstrate caring for vulnerable patient population.
More than 120 handmade cards from art students of Lowell High School were delivered to Special Immunology Services at Saint Mary’s Health Care in early December. As a class project, the students put much thought and creativity into the cards. Each card displays an inspirational theme and design for patients who are facing the lifelong illness of HIV/AIDS.
Inspirational “Fight,” “Get Better Soon,” and “When the Going Gets Tough,” messages speak volumes to both the associates and patients of the clinic. The staff displayed the cards throughout the waiting room, with many patients stopping to read them and comment on them.
“They all have really nice messages,” said Marina Lizardo, RN, at the clinic. “Very encouraging to our patients.”
Also, students from Lowell made six “no-sew” blankets for the clinic. The staff plans to give the clinic’s pregnant patients the blankets for extra comfort.
Bradley Parks, medical case manager, said that the associates were really touched. “We thank the students and Lowell Schools so much, especially on behalf of our patients. The fact that they’re taking the time within their busy curriculum to include education about HIV/AIDS is just remarkable.”
